Our person-centered Services for People Living with Disabilities (SPLD) division provides clients with connections to employment, critical mental health counseling, and a wide range of services that address the whole individual. Many Brooklyn residents who participate in SPLD programs cannot pursue vocational training or placement due to the degree of their mental illness or intellectual disability. This division works to reduce stigma around mental health illness, while encouraging and supporting self-determination in the lives of our clients.

Apartment Programs

BCS offers 2 types of residential programs to persons with intellectual disabilities; Individualized Residential Alternatives (IRA) and Individual Supports and Services (ISS).

Individualized Residential Alternatives (IRA)
IRA provides room, board and individualized service options to individuals living with disabilities. Staff is on-site 24 hours, 7 days a week to offer support and supervision to the residents. This includes teaching the residents life skills, inclusion in community integration activities, and medical monitoring. Individuals are encouraged to make choices in all aspects of their daily living routine to the best of their ability, including choosing the décor in their apartment, making healthy food choices, and voting on recreation and vacation destinations for group outings with other members living at the residence.

Individual Supports and Services (ISS)
ISS assists adults with intellectual disabilities who have the capability and desire to live on their own with minimal staff support. The program provides funds to pay for housing costs, and on a limited basis, funds to pay for food, transportation, and clothing. ISS is also a housing subsidy program.

Hourly Waiver Respite

The Hourly Waiver Respite Program provides recreational activities for individuals with intellectual disabilities while simultaneously providing respite for their family members. Participants engage in fun-filled activities such as arts and crafts, special occasion parties, pot lucks, trips, and most notably, a bowling league that meets weekly and competes in a bowling tournament twice a year. The program provides a space for individuals to build social skills and to feel accepted and included amongst like-minded peers.

Lifelong Enrichment Program (LEP)

The Lifelong Enrichment Program (LEP) serves adults with intellectual disabilities aged 50 or older. LEP guides these individuals in planning for their futures, and supporting their health, mobility and functioning with health assessments, vital sign screenings, healthcare training, and contacting primary care physicians when needed. The program’s overall goal is to help participants plan their transition from supported employment careers into partial or full retirement, giving them the tools and resources they need to remain active and engaged.

NYC Mural Arts Project

The BCS New York City Mural Arts Project (NYCMAP) uses a collaborative mural-making process to foster new relationships in order to discuss and promote mental health andin New York City’s communities. BCS works with community-based organizations, artists, people living with a mental health condition, and the community at large to promote mental health awareness and break down stigmas associated with mental illness. Together, we translate our conversations into a mural that reflects the diversity and strength of everyone involved in the mural-making process. NYCMAP is a collaboration of BCS and the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
